Most of us have crossed over into the digital age and own a digital camera. But not all of us have pro skills to capture the moment 100% the way we want it to look. Digital image editing software has become an important part of correcting our images. Here is a run down of the best image editing programs.

Adobe Photoshop

The grandaddy of all photo editing, touchup, and color painting software, Adobe Photoshop is the preferred choice for professionals and amateurs. The program is available on both Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS X. Photoshop is definitely not an easy program to use but given its wide range of features and flexibility, it cant be beat.

GIMP

A very good open source program similar to Adobe Photoshop. The Gimp is runs on many different platforms including Windows, Linux, and Mac. Though some people use it to replace Photoshop, it isn't a total feature for feature knock off. Still, you can't beat the free price tag.

Corel Paint Shop Pro

A low cost complete photo editing program available on Microsoft Windows. Use it to touchup photos and fix common problems like red eye, brightness and sharpness. Basic features like resize, crop, rotate and filtering are available. Perfect for beginners.

Ulead PhotoImpact

Another low cost photo editing program. Very easy to use with one click fixes to reduce noise, red eye, and photo retouching. Available for Windows only.

The GIMP is very good

I use the GIMP to do most of my photo editing. Can't beat free. It is as every bit as good as Adobe Photoshop. A little different in some ways but a good replacement.
