Read about the basics first and then maybe learn openings. Chess puzzle books are good too where they should a board position and then you are supposed to solve the puzzle in a few moves.
"Practical Chess Excercises" by Ray Cheng is a good starting to get in the frame of mind of playing chess. Tha one will keep you busy for a week.
"Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess" by Bobby Fischer is also a good starting book. Its been around in print for a long time and is one of the classics in chess books. This is a very good book for people starting out.
