A bit of good news in this struggling economy. 95% of Americans will be getting a tax break under Obama's stimulus plan. But don't get too excited now. It's only $65 a month.
In his weekly Saturday radio address, President Obama said:
"I'm pleased to announce that this morning the Treasury Department began directing employers to reduce the amount of taxes withheld from paychecks meaning that by April 1st a typical family will begin taking home at least $65 more every month".
A Drop In The Bucket
In the big picture we all know this is a drop in the bucket. Sixty five dollars a month barely pays for the electricity bill. But it is something and a start. Realize its not going to help those who need it the most - the unemployed. So I'm quite puzzled. This sort of falls along the same lines of former President Bush's $400 tax rebate. We all know it accomplished very little and didn't stimulate anything except debate why gas and oil prices soared through the roof.
Roads and Bridges To Nowhere
We hear so much about job creation to construct and rebuild highways and bridges. Really now, what good is that going to do? So we have nice roads and bridges to drive on. The problem is, where are we driving to? Surely not work if unemployment continues to rise.
Federal Coupons
What American families need right now is for the government to hand each Federal coupons redeemable for the basics of life. Go into the back room and start firing up those printing presses. Create Federal coupons that are only used within the United States to pay for food, electricity, water, and telephone. Hand out $500 per month to each family. That will make things better, at least for now.
