Let's paint a picture. Your sitting at a restaurant and your child starts to exhibit choking signs. Given time is of the essence, you must act immediately.

Heimlich Maneuver Steps

  1. Have the person stand upright
  2. Stand behind the person
  3. Wrap your arms around the choker's waist
  4. Form a fist with one hand with thumb pointing inwards toward victim. Place fist above the belly button
  5. With your other hand, grab the fist
  6. Squeeze upwards in a quick thrusting motion into the stomach
  7. Continue until object is dislodged

Contrary To Belief: Choking Incidents Occur Greater In Older People

UK journal Bandolier says that the greatest risk in choking incidents is not in children but by older people. They explain that as people get older, the risk gets greater. This is contrary to what most people think.

Choking Incidents Among Children Remains High

However, the number of incidents among children should not be ignored. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention 17,537 children 14 years or younger were taken to US emergency hospitals for incidents of choking.
