Sony
Sony Playstation Portable fans, you've waited long enough. Bloomberg News is reporting that the new Sony PSP2 will be available starting January 27.

Rumours are that the new PSP2 will have an "HD like" touch panel display along with dual analog thumb sticks. The new screen will be bigger than previous PSP models also.

The PSP2 is also believed to have dual cameras, front and back and use a memory stick instead of a Universal Media Disc (UMD) drive for storage.

Sony PSP2
Existing PSP owners aren't going to be happy with that as their existing games won't be backward compatible. The UMD format never really caught on and has been a proprietary disc design Sony used only on the PSP. We liked it because the disc size was small and compact but they were susceptible to being scratched.

With Nintendo releasing it's 3DS on March 27, its going to be interesting seeing the two compete. It would be in Sony's benefit to beat Nintendo to a ship date and have product availability this month. The Nintendo 3DS is already taking pre-orders starting at $250.

We imagine the pricing of the PSP2 will be similar. But when it comes down to it, its about the graphics and quality of the games. In addition, competition from the likes of Apple iPad 2 which is rumoured to be getting a much higher resolution glass table display at 2048x1536. It will be pretty difficult to not take a hard look at the Apple iPad 2 this year as the Nintendo 3DS and Sony PSP2 come out.
