Speedup Windows By Removing Useless Programs

March 19 2009 by TimShay

Ever wonder sometimes why your computer starts to come to a crawl? It most likely is some useless Windows programs running on your system. This article will be a ongoing running list of programs that are candidates for removal from your computer.

We hate slow running computers just as much as you do. We also hate that software vendors attempt to slyly add programs behind the scenes, in our startup trays without our knowledge and approval. As a computer user, you should never trust any program that is running on your computer. Privacy is important. You wouldn't let someone go snooping in your house would you?

These programs we consider to be annoying and pointless to be running in our Windows systems. The take up memory, rob CPU processing, and do very little to make it worthwhile to have them running. Oh sure the software vendors would like you to think so, but in reality, they are a nuisance.

GoogleUpdate.exe

If you are a Google Chrome browser user, you probably are unaware that there is a Google process running behind the scenes in your computer. The disturbing part of this, is that Google is not playing fair here because when you uninstall Chrome, GoogleUpdate.exe doesn't get removed.

This is unacceptable behavior. Google says that this is an installer and auto updater for their Google programs. Wihle that may be true, the beef I have with these sorts of programs are that they are potential spyware. Not only that but if I wanted to autoupdate my systems with Google software, that should be MY CHOICE, not Google's.

GoogleUpdate.exe takes up 1.8MB of memory and sucks up bandwidth. Who knows what else it does. The fact that you cannot remove it even though Google says GoogleUpdate.exe will be removed is incorrect. After uninstalling Google Chrome, the only Google application we had on our system, GoogleUpdate.exe will not go away.

The only thing you can do is run msconfig and in the Startup tab, disable it.

Nwiz.exe

Most desktop computers today are using some hardware from Nvidia whether it be the motherboard itself, video cards, etc. One process that is running is Nwiz.exe that is part of the nView Desktop Manager. By default, nView is installed in our startup menu so the best thing to do is run msconfig and disable it in the Startup tab to save yourself memory.

Jqs.exe

This is the Java quick starter executable from Sun Microsystem. If you don't use Java programs then don't bother using this. Its purpose is to speedup loading of Java programs. The process takes up 1.5MB of memory. Why would any Windows users really care? The answer is the majority don't so go to msconfig and disable it under the Services tab.

jusched.exe

Another Sun Microsystem Java process. Tihs program is responsible for checking for updates to Java. Again, if you don't use Java programs then don't bother using it. Run msconfig and disable it under the startup tab.
