After General Motors bankruptcy filing yesterday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average will no longer have it as a component. For 83 years GM has been a cornerstone in the Dow Jones Industrials Average but no more. Citigroup will also be removed out of the index next week.

Broadcom (BRCM) announced before the bell that it is making an offer to acquire Emulex (ELX) at $9.25/share for its common stock. This is a 40% increase over Monday's closing price.

The Dow Jones Industrials jumped more than 150 points on speculation that China will undergo its own economic stimulus plan. Stocks such as heavy equipment maker Caterpillar and alunimum companies like Alcoa and Kaiser Alunimum led the charge.

The New York State Labor Department announced that December was the largest monthly spike in unemployment ever and that over 100,000 jobs have been lost in the last three months. NYSLD said that 7% of the New Yorkers fell out of work in December.
